Maths
“The only way to learn Mathematics is to do Mathematics.” Paul Halmos
At Porchester, we are dedicated to nurturing confident, numerate learners with a genuine enjoyment and strong understanding of mathematics. We endeavour to nurture a positive ‘CAN DO’ attitude towards mathematics, empowering our children to approach the subject with confidence and enthusiasm. We strive to foster a deep understanding and enjoyment of maths, encouraging every pupil to develop as a capable and resilient mathematician. We believe mathematics is a vital tool for making sense of the world around us. It helps children build their ability to calculate, reason logically, and solve problems. Through exploring patterns and relationships in numbers and space, pupils begin to see how maths connects to their everyday lives. Our curriculum is built around a concrete, pictorial, and abstract approach, ensuring that all learners gain a secure and meaningful grasp of mathematical concepts. We place fluency in the fundamentals of mathematics at the core of our teaching, enabling pupils to recall and apply knowledge with accuracy and understanding. Our aim is for every child to have full access to the maths curriculum, allowing them to grow in independence, confidence, and competence. Through our mastery approach, we support children in becoming independent thinkers, fully equipped to apply their mathematical skills beyond the classroom.
Times Tables
At Porchester, we recognise the vital role times tables play in helping children develop fluency and confidence in mathematics. Quick and accurate recall of multiplication and division facts forms the foundation for many areas of the maths curriculum, including written calculations, fractions, and problem solving.
We are committed to ensuring that all children can confidently recall and apply times tables facts up to 12 × 12 by the end of Year 4, in line with national expectations. To support this, we provide regular opportunities for practice through engaging activities, online platforms such as Times Tables Rock Stars, and targeted interventions where needed. We also encourage reinforcement at home, recognising the importance of a strong partnership between school and families in helping children succeed.
Our goal is to equip all pupils with the skills they need to approach maths with confidence, accuracy, and enjoyment.
Children are taught and should know the following times tables:
